Microsoft Corp. is expected to unveil a pair of mobile phones geared for younger users

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Microsoft Corp. is expected to unveil a pair of mobile phones geared for younger users at a public event scheduled for next Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The Microsoft phones are expected to feature touch screens and keyboards, and will represent an evolution of the “Sidekick” devices offered by Danger Inc. — a company that Microsoft  acquired in 2008.

Messaging and social-networking applications will be featured prominently on the phones. According to media reports, they will be available for use on the Verizon Wireless network.

A Microsoft representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Microsoft has long been expected to start releasing tailored mobile devices that feature the company’s software and services, in order to keep pace with similar undertakings by rivals including Google Inc.  and Apple Inc.

Microsoft has for years developed the underlying software needed to operate a mobile phone, but has relied on partners to design, produce and market related devices.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant has prior experience producing hardware with partners, such as the company’s Xbox video-game console and Zune media player.

The company designed the mobile phones to be unveiled next Monday, though according to media reports they will be produced by Sharp Corp.

Sharp has historically been a maker of Danger’s Sidekick devices, which are designed with sliding keyboards and large screens for easier messaging.

Microsoft and its peers are betting heavily on mobile Internet services and advertising, as users are expected to increasingly rely on devices such as phones and tablet computers to get online.

However, Microsoft is widely seen as a step behind Apple and Google. “They’ve clearly lost the consumer market to Apple and Google,” said Gartner Inc. analyst Ken Dulaney.

Apple has seen increasing demand for its iPhone, unveiled over three years ago, while Google has now released several phones that use its Android mobile software, including the Nexus One device.

According to data published by ComScore Inc. on Monday, Microsoft’s share of the U.S. smartphone subscriber market fell 4 points to 15.1% in the three months ended in February.

Google’s share meanwhile rose to 9%, while Apple’s share dipped slightly to 25.4%.

Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry device, retained a commanding lead with a 42.1% share of the U.S. smartphone subscriber market, according to ComScore data.

On May 26, 2009, Microsoft officially announced plans to release a touch-screen version of the Zune portable media player, intended to compete with Apple’s iPod Touch. The new device is called the Zune HD, and offers several features not found on the iPod Touch, including an OLED display, HD radio, and high-definition video playback (using an optional dock accessory). Long-standing Zune features, such as a photo viewer, games, podcast management, and Zune Pass music subscription integration, will continue to be supported, as well.

The Zune HD will go on sale September 15, offered in 16GB and 32GB models, priced at $219 and $289, respectively. Both models will be available in stores with either black or platinum finishes. As with previous generations of the portable media player, additional color and customization options will be available at launch directly from Microsoft’s Zune Originals online storefront.

The Zune HD will be the first Zune to include an Internet Explorer Web browser, complementing its other Wi-Fi features (song sharing, Channel streaming, and Zune Marketplace browsing). The Zune HD’s browser is optimized for the touch screen with an onscreen keyboard, but there’s no word on whether it will be capable of streaming Flash media (used by sites such as YouTube and Pandora), a capability that is currently lacking in the Safari browser for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Microsoft also unveiled plans to dramatically beef up the video download selection of its Zune Marketplace online store, and use the improved storefront to power the movie and TV downloads available to the Xbox gaming console. The new storefront will support movie rentals that can be transferred to Zune hardware (similar to iTunes movie rentals) playable from either your computer or from the Zune HD.

The Zune HD isn’t the first MP3 player to offer a 3.3-inch touch-screen OLED display or high-definition video output, but it is one of the first portable audio devices to integrate an HD radio tuner. Beyond the added fidelity of HD radio, the format also lends itself well to transmitting artist and song data, which is useful for the Zune’s existing FM radio song-tagging and download feature.

Microsoft rates the Zune HD’s battery life at 33 hours of music playback and 8.5 hours of video (with Wi-Fi deactivated). If these numbers are accurate, they represent a considerable improvement over previous generations of Zune hardware, which were often criticized for poor battery performance.

Premium Zune digital entertainment service to be available internationally on Xbox LIVE

REDMOND, Wash. — May 26, 2009 Microsoft Corp. today announced the evolution of Zune, the company’s end-to-end music and entertainment service, to a new platform and new markets. Zune will extend its video service to Xbox LIVE internationally this fall. This marks an important development in the Zune strategy and brings the Zune brand to more than 17 million international Xbox LIVE subscribers. In addition, Microsoft confirmed the next generation of the Zune portable media player, Zune HD. Available in the U.S. this fall, Zune HD is the first portable media player that combines a built-in HD Radio receiver, high-definition (HD) video output capabilities, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touch screen, Wi-Fi and an Internet browser.

Introducing Zune HD

Zune HD is the next iteration of the Zune device family and brings a new level of listening and viewing experiences to the portable media player category.

  • Zune HD comes with a built-in HD Radio receiver so users can listen to higher-quality sound than traditional radio on the go. Users also will have access to the additional song and artist data broadcast by HD Radio stations as well as additional channels from their favorite stations multicasting in HD. If you don’t like the song playing on your station’s HD channel, switch to its HD2 or HD3 channels for additional programming.
  • The bright OLED touch screen interface allows users to flip through music, movies and other content with ease, and the 16:9 widescreen format display (480×272 resolution) offers a premium viewing experience on the go.
  • The HD-compatible output lets Zune HD customers playback supported HD video files from the device through a premium high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) audiovisual docking station (sold separately) direct to an HD TV in 720p.*
